Doctors Prescribing Fruits and Veggies in New York – Something to Think About
I think it’s brilliant, as long as the FDA doesn’t start trying to enforce labeling laws on apples and oranges (and drive the price sky-high while they’re at it).
“Prescribing” healthy whole foods underlines the fact that the body is designed to heal itself from the inside out with the tools God gave us. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains – none of God’s bounty was given to us pre-packaged in a cardboard box. We did that ourselves. In my profession, I’ve seen first-hand how God has given us everything we need to heal ourselves if we only have the strength to resist tampering with the original ingredients. And even here He helps us, because as it says in Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
God gave us two other tools to use as well to maintain our health: physical work and sunlight. Sixty percent of all type 2 diabetes sufferers are deficient in Vitamin D – which is made by our bodies in response to sunlight – and few of us get enough exercise. Go out today. Walk to the grocery store if you can, or to the farmer’s market, and rejoice in God’s bounty of fresh summer produce. This weekend, walk or hike in a park or on the beach with a pack of nuts and berries.
You don’t need a prescription – just a little scripture for inspiration:
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
